How are they formed (if they are chemicals)?

  1. Skunks have musk glands and this is the fluid that they spray at their attackers when they are excited.

  2. I loved how you all answered,

But no one gave her an answer

  3. The best-known, most distinctive, and often most notorious feature of skunks is their anal scent glands, which they can use as a defensive weapon. They are similar to, though much more developed than, the glands found in species of the Mustelidae family. Skunks have two glands, one on either side of the a**s, that produce a mixture of sulfur-containing chemicals (methyl and butyl thiols(mercaptans)) that has a highly offensive smell that can be described as a combination of the odors of rotten eggs, garlic and burnt rubber. The odor of the fluid is strong enough to ward off bears and other potential attackers, and can be difficult to remove from clothing. Muscles located next to the scent glands allow them to spray with high accuracy as far as 2 to 5 metres (7 to 15 ft). The smell aside, the spray can cause irritation and even temporary blindness, and is sufficiently powerful to be detected by even an insensitive human nose anywhere up to a mile downwind. Their chemical defense, though unusual, is effective, as illustrated by this extract from Charles Darwin's Voyage of the Beagle:

  4. It's called George W.

  5. Good ol' Mister Skunk. If you're near one and they do a handstand, make sure you're at least 15 feet away or more. From the first link below:

"The best-known feature of skunks is the great development of their anal scent glands, which they can use as a defensive weapon. They have two glands, on either side of the a**s, that produce a mixture of sulfur-containing chemicals that has a highly offensive smell."

    And from the 2nd:

"The chemical compositions involved in odor are different among skunk species, but contain various thiols (sulfur compounds) and thioacetates (salts of sulfur compounds)."

I'm a naturalist and I couldn't remember this one very well, so I'm glad I could help you and refresh my memory at the same time!
