Gerbils cost about 7 dollars each but make sure to get two.  they are very social and will actually live longer if they have a buddy.  just make sure you get a same s*x pair.

Depending on how old you are and where you live, you could try a number of things to earn money for a gerbil and gerbil supplies:

-baby sitting

-pet sitting

-house sitting

-doing extra chores/house keeping

-mowing lawns

-getting a part time job

Gerbils are social animals and need companions. I would suggest getting a pair of gerbils (of the same s*x) instead of just one. I have also made the following list of supplies keeping two gerbil in mind:

$30-15-gallon aquarium with screen lid.

$7-20-bedding. I recommend you use Kaytee Soft-Sorbent.

Wood shavings are very cheap but are not good for your pet. They can cause some serious health complications. If you must buy them, STAY AWAY from CEDAR and PINE. Aspen is okay.

$0-3-nesting material, like pieces of an old sock or t-shirt that they can shred up.

$5-high quality gerbil food.

$2-ceramic food bowl.

$2-chew-proof water bottle.

$2-treats.

$3-a hideout.

$3-exercise toys such as a Run-About ball for the floor or an exercise wheel for inside the cage.

$3-wooden chew sticks.

$4-vitamins.
