im MB on my volleyball team last yea, with most blocks even though i was out half the season (bad patellar tendinitis) and had some good kills, especially being quick set. the problem is, im working a lot with the varsity team and such, and they're using the numbered sets. im too embarrassed to admit i dont know the terms.

what are 1, 2, and 3 sets?

  1. 1,2 and 3 are the height you want your set's on the net. 1 being right on top of the net and 3 being the highest. Since you mentioned varsity, coach's usually prefer middle hitters to hit a 1 to continue fast play.

Don't be afraid to ask your teammates for advice since your new to these term's. Remember these are the people your playing on the court with. Communicating on and off the court is important.

    Good Luck

  2. 1 is the same thing as a quick..

2 is the same thing as an X, except the middle hits it.. but varsity setters will never set a 2 unless its an X.

3 is a quick shoot between the left&middle of the court.. cant really explain the 3.

  3. hey, man.. u'll embarrass yourself more for not having a clue about the numbered sets! it won't do you any harm asking your coach or your team mates about it because they are there to help and develop with you as a team! the level you are playing now are much more different than in your high school level. there are a lot more tactical play other than the i,2 and 3 sets. learn all the set plays that your team use and you can only be a better middle hitter.

  4. It really depends on the team.  You really need to ask your coach or the setter to make sure.

I had one team that used this system.

1-quick set right next to setter

2-quick set about 3 feet away from the setter

3-quick set about 10 feet away from setter in the middle of the usual quick set for the middle and the high outside set for the outside

Another team used the same for the 1 and 3, but the 2 was a high set for the middle right next to the setter

Another team had the same calls for the 1 and 3, but the 2 was a back quick for the middle hitter
