If a = b, and b=1,

Then;

a^2 = b^2          ; the square of equals are equal

a b  = b^2           ;substitution

a^2 - ab = a^2 - b^2    ;axiom of subtraction

a(a - b) = (a + b)(a - b)       ;factoring

( up to here the math operation is legal)

a = a + b     ;canceling like terms on both sides

( this is where the fallacy lies)

a + 1 = a + b + 1      ; axiom of addition

1+1 = 1+1+1            ;substitution

2 = 3

The fallacy is in the cancellation of (a - b) from both sides of the equation. This is tantamount to dividing zero by zero; which is not allowed because the answer is indeterminate and not 1.

I don't understand why people keep asking this question.  1 + 1 is 2, not 3.  If you have one apple and add one more, you have two apples.  Plain and simple.

1+1=2, is only correct if we look at 1 & 2 as different numbers, and not merely the same thing looked at from different perspectives.

Therefore, 1+1=3 could easily be the same as 1+2=3!
