I'm 1/8 Cherokee by blood (my father's mother was full blood Cherokee). Does this still count as bing considered Cherokee? I want to learn some of the ways of my ancestors, but I'm not sure if I could be considered Cherokee.

  1. You have to have a relative on the list of those that were on the trail of tears. It is searchable online. Our web site has it. But if you live in that way you know. Both of my mothers Granmother's were Cherokee. Hard to prove it though.

  2. To be officially a member of the Cherokee tribe, first of all decide whether your ancestors walked "The Trail of Tears" or evaded capture and deportation from their homeland.  Since this is the pivotal event in Cherokee history, you should have heard some stories about this growing up from older relatives if your ancestors found themselves forcibly removed.

The Eastern Cherokee limit membership to 1/16 blood Cherokees as well as direct linear descendants of an ancestor whose name is on the 1924 Baker roll.  Western Cherokee  (those deported to Oklahoma) require direct linear descent from an ancestor whose name was on the Dawes Roll (1898-1914).

Even if your Cherokee ancestors didn't sign either one of these rolls, if you can in any way document Cherokee ancestry, you are of Cherokee descent just as you may also descend from any other nationality.

  3. Any amount counts!

  4. Actually I think 1/8 does count

  5. wouldnt that make you a quarter (1/4) and that would be enough to be considered Cherokee.

  6. HOW !

If you can answer that, then you are an Indian.
