What information is greatly lacking that prevents the solidification of a theory explaining the origins of cells similar to those existing today?

  1. When Darwin traveled to the Galapagos Islands, he found, from island to island, that their were the same species but with different adaptions, all varying based on their environment. For example, on one island, a turtle would have a longer neck in order to reach the vegetation that grew on higher bushes while on another island, another type of turtle would have a shorter neck for vegetation that grew close to the ground. Therefore, cells that existed then would have evolved as the species adapted to what they are today.


  2. There are very few cellular fossils.  The earliest fossils are some bacteria fossils.  Since cells are so small and don't have structures that easily mineralize, there is huge gaps in the cell fossil records.

    However, the fact that all living cells share the same genetic material, DNA, similar enzymatic pathways for energy release and storage, ATP, there is good evidence that all existing cells have come from previously existing cells.
