  1. Is it hard to get a job? No, you could be working tomorrow, literally. Do you want that job, probably not. Mud Logging companies are crying for people right now.

I completed my last class and was out of school for two days before I got my first job. It's not a job that was posted, it was because of knowing the right person. (July 2008) Yeah, just last month.

My new job pays about $85k and in 6-9 months I can expect $120k a year. **Note** My case is somewhat special, I was in the Army and graduated *** Laude AND despite what people tell you GRADES ARE VERY important for geologist jobs.

However I have friends who earned Masters Degrees and can't find a job and are now mud logging for some terrible rate of $150 a day. However experience is very valuable.

Geology is the study of rocks, not sure what else you think it could be. I've tried to figure that out, sorry.

Geology falls in the Earth Science discipline. Under that umbrella you have everything from Petroleum Geology to Environmental Studies.

  2. 1) Yes, there is demand for geologists. I'm not too sure what you mean by the second part of the question. Geology is the study of the Earth, which is made up of rocks (among other things).

    2) Earth science is a collection of "sciences" (Geography, Climatology etc....) that typically don't require the pure science (chemistry, physics and math) background that is required for a degree in geology. So yes there is a difference.
