If there is a chance of the beam being shone into your eyes, either directly or from a mirror, then yes, you need protection.

Whether or not you should wear safety glasses depends on what you are doing with the laser. Some applications such as astronomy do not require laser safety glasses and would be impossible with them. Other applications such as bouncing a beam off mirrors or using optics would require laser safety glasses.
