  1. If You Have 1 Week

Day 1 -- Fly or sail into Palermo and allow 1 day to recover from travel fatigue. If you recover sufficiently, take our walking tour through old Palermo.

Day 2 -- Visit Palazzo dei Normanni and the Museo Archeológico Regionale in the morning. Head for Monreale and its mosaic-laden cathedral in the afternoon.

Day 3 -- Travel toward Messina for an overnight, but spend most of the day exploring Cefalù, dominated by its Romanesque Duomo.

Days 4 & 5 -- After Messina, head down the coastline to spend 2 nights in the medieval hilltop town of Taormina. One day can be spent discovering the town and getting in some beach time. On the final day from your base in Taormina, visit the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna.

Day 6 -- From Taormina, continue south to the ancient city of Syracuse, where you can spend the rest of the day wandering through its archaeological gardens. Overnight in this ancient place.

Day 7 -- After bidding adieu to Syracuse, head west for another ancient city, Agrigento, to explore its Valle di Templi (Valley of the Temples), which has some of the greatest Greek ruins in the world. With a little imagination, you'll know why Pindar called Agrigento "the most beautiful city built by mortal men." Overnight here before driving north the next day for your transportation links out of Palermo. If you have time in the morning, explore the ruins of the Greek temples at Selinunte before continuing on to Palermo and the end of your Sicilian sojourn.

  3. This isn't going to be the answer you want, but after reading other peoples, I have to add that you should deffinatly see the Aeolian islands off of Sicily.  Stromboli is amazing with an active volcano that erupts every night and Lipari (the largest island) is quite gorgous for a day walking around.  Also don't miss Catania and Mt. Etna or Tarromina.  I found Palermo to be not that exciting, but maybe that was just me.
