  2. 1. Lightning heats nearby air to an estimated 18,000°F. The expansion of that air due to the tremendous amounts of heat creates a shockwave known as thunder.

    2. About 270 people.

    3. About 50 people.

    4. Convective and convergent lifting mechanisms are very common in Florida. Both produce intense thunderstorms often. Thunderstorms have a lot of heat and moisture to work with in Florida.

    5. First, don't use a corded phone. Second, don't use water in any way. Third, stay away from windows. Fourth, don't be in a small structure. Fifth, don't hook electrical devices up to an outlet.

  3. 1. The average speed of light is much higher than the average speed of sound. Although lightning and thunder occur at the same time, lightning occurs first before the thunder because the spped of light is faster than the speed of sound.

    2. Not so sure, but I think it's around 120,000

    3. I'm pretty sure it's around 100

    4. The evening and night time temperatures in the lower70s are perfect temperatures for thunderstorms. Also, most storms form off the coast of an area in the ocean, so that's also why Florida is a prime thunderstorm factory. It's also located near the tropics, which experience the same type of weather at times.

    5. Rule #1: NEVER use any appliances that need to be plugged in that you can carry with some ease. Ex: a fryer

Rule #2: NEVER talk on a cell phone near any running water.

Rule #3: NEVER hide under a tree during a thunderstorm.

Rule #4: ABSOLUTELY NO swimming during a thunderstorm.

Rule #5: Try to stay away from conductors such as metal, water, and copper, especially when you're outside.

I chose these rules because these are the ones that can determine an untouched person from an injured one, and an injured person from a dead one. These rules that people frequently fail to follow are the cause of many injuries and deaths in the U.S. over the past 30 years.

  4. 1. Lightening heats the air realllly hot and causes thunder. AFTER lightning because sounds travels slower than light.

    2-5. Don't know.
