I have 2 male zebra finches and recently they have been jumping on one another and trying to sit on each other. They make these noises that they don't usually make when this is happening. It's hard to catch them because they do not like people looking at them and will stop whatever are they doing. Any ideas from experienced zebra finch owners/breeders?

  1. They could be trying to mate, or they could be fighting. Are you sure they're both boys? If they are, they could be wanting to mate badly and have gone "g*y". It's normal for male birds that never get mates. If you can't or don't want to get them girlfriends, leaving them together won't hurt anything. You can separate them if you'd like.

If they look like they're fighting and trying to hurt each other, then you'll definately want to separate them. They could be fighting for dominance, pecking and jumping on each other.

If there's no real problem going on, then you shouldn't need to do anything. Just let them do what they want :)  I've never had finches, but I do have doves and pigeons. It happens with a lot of birds and animals. I've actually got two pair of male doves that have gone as far as building a nest and taking turns laying in it (even though they have no eggs!). Every once in a while they'll give a peck or slap each other with their wings, but in the end they go back to being lovey dovey little guys.

    Hope that helps :)
