  1. You can set up 2 or more computers using one modem and you can also use a modem that you bought. If you buy a modem, you will need to call comcast so that they can activate that modem using the vpn numbers, and other numbers from that modem, so you will be able to get connected to the internet. In order to connect your computers using ethernet cables, you will need a 4-8 port switch or a router. 2. All you need is one modem (the one they supplied) and a router.  This picture shows how to set it up.  It shows an xbox but it's the same concept with two computers.

[edit] Oh yeah, you'll obviously need the wires.  You'll need three (3) ethernet network patch cables (cat5e cable with RJ45 connectors).  One will go from the modem to the router and then one will go from each computer to the router.

I would suggest getting them at an electronics store rather than online or you'll probably end up paying more for shipping than you'll pay for the cables themselves.  Don't be daunted by this but make sure you don't get what's known as a "crossover" cable, it most likely won't work.

  3. You are right that a router is required. Its purpose is to split the connection from the cable modem and distribute it to the PCs. Basically, the router logs into the cable newtork and your PCs log into the router.

Linksys, D-Link and other companies all make routers for home use and most will have cable connectors in the back so you can make wired connections from your PCs. Most routers also support wireless today, but if you don't want to use wireless, you can have the router turn that off.

I won't go into details about how to hook it up, because they obviously come with instructions that are VERY easy to follow - especially when connecting to cable. Remember that home-based routers are designed for home-based people. Companies like Linksys spend loads of money finding ways to make it easy.

AbdulQadir above me just mentioned Internet Connection Sharing. I used to use it all the time, but it does have a downside. The host PC (which shares the connection with the other one) must have two network cards in it - one to the modem and one to the other PC. The cable between the PCs can't be a regular cable. It has to be a crossover cable. Finally the host PC must be on all the time for it to share its connection. It's a little awkward, but since you may have to buy a cable and a 2nd network card, it may be the same price as a cheap router.

  4. sure.  just buy a router.  plug the wire from the comcast modem to the router.  then plug in two more wires from the router to the other two computers.  reboot and viola.

have fun and make sure you have your firewall enabled on both computers!

  5. Yes you can.  You will need...

    One (1)- router, any brand.

One (1)- cable modem (supplied by comcast)

Three (3)- Cat5 or higher Ethernet cables (buy at any Walmart, computer store, drug store, heck even home improvement stores sell them.

You will connect your cable modem to the port labeled WAN on the router via one of the Ethernet cables, you will then connect each computer via Ethernet cable to the router (most computers today come standard with an Ethernet plug built into them) .  And that is it, you will be able to share the Internet connection with both computers.

I have comcast and it works perfectly.  P.S. doing it wirelessly isn't that much more difficult.  All you need is to buy a wireless adapter for each computer you want to hook up wirelessly.

Here are generic instructions on how to hook up a comcast connection to a Linksys™ brand router, a low cost and good quality brand of router found in many stores...

  6. A hub would do the trick for a lot less of the price imo.

Plug both pc's into the hub, plug the comcast thing into the hub, away you go.

  8. I can elicit one simple way

1 computer on which internet is running. 2nd computer can then connect to 1st computer and share the internet connection.

For this 1st computer need internet connection + 1 ethernet card + a free software (like analog proxy)

The 2nd computer can then connect using the ethernet connection to ur 1st computer and networked.

I think u can find some detail of howto on google.
