My 1 month old makes a real fuss when I´m bottle feeding him, he throws his arms around, breaths very heavy out of his nose, drips milk out of the side of his mouth, the only thing I have to say that he eats the required amount, it just seems like he makes a big ordeal out of it.

  1. I agree with preemie mommy.  Try a smaller nipple or a different bottle set up with a beginner nipple.

  2. the nipple may be too fast for him. He's probably getting too much milk at one time and can't swallow it fast enough. Try a slow flow one for now until he's a bit older and can handle a faster nipple.

  3. My little one started doing that, and then I realize that the milk was coming out way to fast for her. Just tip the bottle upside down, if a lot comes out of the nipple thats the problem. Also remember that milk will come out of the side of their mouth regardless, but I am pretty suer thats the problem.

  4. do you always bottle feed him- or did you originally breast feed him. Maybe he just hasn't gotten a grasp of the whole different nipple and is frustrated by it. If you are switching to formula from breast-milk maybe he doesn't like the change in taste. My daughter does all of this she hastes the taste of formula we had to use it once, and some bottles she has problems latching onto it or the nipple will gag her. She just is so used to breastfeeding.

  5. This may sound obvious, but do you burp him every few minutes?  If he has learned that the bottle means tummy ache then he may be fighting the pain hes associated with it.  Make sure to burp after each quarter of the bottle.

  6. Did he just start doing this?

I ask because my daughter did this around the same time and lasted for about 2 weeks. She still drank all her bottle, but it was like a wrestling match to keep her still. She has finally calmed down, but now she is into the lets pull on mommy's shirt and kick as I drink.

Maybe its just a thing they go through, they learned that they are becoming a lil more mobile now and they want to try out their "skillz".

If it becomes too much to handle or he starts to refuse to eat, I would have a talk with his DR just to make sure there is no problem with latching on to the bottle or anything else like reflux, something that makes it uncomfortable for him.

    Good Luck

  7. Could be that it upsets his stomach. thats what it sounds like to me. my son would do that when he had gas. so could be gas. try giving him some malacon. could also be that he is getting the milk too fast...the nipple is too big. try changing the nipple. if you are breastfeeding too..he could just not like the change/switch..he might just like the boob! so it is a way of telling you no he doesnt want the bottle he wants your boob. lol. if that is the case go try the wide nipples. they are made for babies switching from the boob to a bottle..it gives them the effect of the nipple being a womens nipple. oh yes and burp every 2oz. make sure they burp! that is a must. even if it takes a while..try different positions to burp. pressure needs to be on the tummy..but not too much because then they will spit up and all the milk will come out! lol.
