I know some of the regulars will say here he goes again -But-

Baseball 1 set of rules no matter where it is played

3 strikes your out not 4 in one park and 6 in another

or 5 balls for a walk not 4

all parks have 3 bases not 5in 1 park and 4 in another

Football

10 yds in one place 14 in another

touchdown 6 points not 11 in another place

a 20 point spot before the game even starts-Hey the Texans could use that one they would still have lost today

Nascar a 20 lap headstart? I dont think so

Before I start to ramble

Why the H cant pool have 1 set of rules like any other sport thats all Im asking

Eight breaker made a point about coin tables-Bar boxes just have a green fee and use open tables thats what we do and it is 100% standard rules no problem

If you need a spot ill give the last 2 or take the break just play by 1 set of rules

Wearing out my typing finger Later Johnny

Thanks

  1. Just one little thought on rules...Not every sport is completely standard...Look at the American League's designated hitters. Not there in the National League, but go to the World Series and you're playing by National League rules. College basketball has a different 3-point area (sorry, don't know what it's called) from NBA...there are probably others-- I just don't know all that much about other sports. But all this stuff is televised for the world to see, so of course everyone knows it. Pretty much everyone who watches pool at all knows 9-ball rules, but nobody knows 8-ball because it's never on TV. If you get pool on TV, you'll get more people understanding the rules.

p.s. I know what you mean Johnny, but if we're just talking about professional-level, then the problem's already solved, since I'm pretty sure professional pool just goes by one rulebook.

p.p.s. I thought everybody's rule issues were going from pool room to pool room and finding different rules at each place. What are the different rules pro tournaments go by? Are you talking about true pro tournaments or pro-am? It's hard to find pro 8-ball tournaments, I think, but I assumed they played by BCA when they had them. The only 9-ball difference I knew of was winner breaks vs. alternate breaks. Can anyone explain?

p.p.p.s. I don't know if I'm included in the 'people' Dre O mentioned, and I didn't bother reading that other guy's answer, but neither Matt nor I had a s*itty answer. I'm not sure what truth you think people don't want to hear, either. The 'truth', Dre O, is that you make the eight in the pocket you call after all your balls are made, and you don't scratch, then you win. You make the nine, you win. All the other little differences from league to league and from pool room to pool room are about the same as the differences you see in other sports. But I'm still confused about whether this question is about professional tournaments or BRBS...I'm not being smart*ss. I really don't know.

    And I didn't give you a thumbs-down.

  2. I was thinking the same thing Lea was when I read your examples. College football has very different rules than the NFL, and that's before we've even mentioned Arena League or the CFL. College and Major League baseball are very different (can you say "aluminum bats"), but rules aren't even consistent in MLB depending on where you're playing. And there are a million different forms of auto racing, and rules are not even close to consistent from one league to the next.

It seems to me consistent rules is more of the exception than the rule.

  3. probably because like everything else in life, nobody likes to stick to one set of rules...they find that messing around with the rules a bit, it helps em out in success.....which is pretty s*itty cuz there's still us other ppl who like to go by what it's really supposed to be.....who knows...and then when you bring it up, ppl answer s*itty replies cuz they don't like to hear the truth........DreO

  4. Look at the answer to Johnny's previous question.
