I have 5 neon tetras in my aquarium and they're swimming around together except one who is away from the group. What does this mean?

I also have 1 molly and 2 bottom-feeders, if that is of any help.

  1. Neons come from either Greece or Australia & tend to stick with other neons having similar personalities.  It could be the one on it's own was mixed in error by the petshop & only speaks Greek; whereas all the others speak English (or occa Australian).  Don't worry - they learn quickly and become bi-lingual within a couple of weeks.

Unless of course the lone Neon is called Scottie Neville (has got no mates and never will) - that could be the only other explantion.

If all else fails it's well documented fish have a memory of around 3 seconds so don't worry that this neon could be stressed about not having friends; he'll only be depressed for a second or so before forgetting.

Last resort if it's stressing you out - flush it - and either be 1 neon down and go buy another for around $2.

    Hope it works out.

  2. is there any chance it could be sick or pregnant?

  3. i have 20 neon tetras in my tank, and sometimes they school, sometimes they just mill around all over the tank. i wouldnt worry as long as it seems healthy and is eating.

  4. i have 30 neon tetras and many other fish in my tank there is always 1 or 2 that dont swim with the school its nothing to worry bout unless it is stressed or ill do u know if it is male or female

males blue lines through the centre are more straighter

the females blue line are curved

if the 1 that is on its own is female she could be releasing her eggs its normal behaviour for fish to seperate when releasing eggs or fry hope this helps u out and good luck

  5. He's not part of their school maybe.

If he seems healthy and fine with this fact don't worry about it. If he seems stressed over it, and you have enough room in your tank I would pick up 2 more so he can be schooled.
