  1. Rod shaped bacteria are called bacilli (singular = bacillus).  There are many, including probably the most famous (certainly the most important in the history of molecular biology) Escherichia coli.

    Many viruses contain RNA as their genetic material.  Most plant viruses, for example are RNA only.  Viruses for the cold (rhinovirus) and the flu (such as Influenzavirus B) contain only RNA forms.

    Some viruses, such as HIV and some others that cause cancer in humans and other species, are retroviruses.  This means that they enter into cells as an RNA form, and then are copied into a DNA form by a process called reverse transcription (very interesting and very important in biotechnology!).  The DNA form can insert itself into the DNA of the host, and hide out for a while as a "provirus."
