  1. I doubt it was rabies, it could be so many possibilites.  The only way to test for rabies is to have the brain tissue tested so maybe you should get her spayed so it wont happen again!

  2. 1 week old kittens are very vulnerable and fragile.  It could have been anything there are countless reasons why some kittens do not make it...from a heart defect and the list goes on and on.   In order for the cat to die of rabies they have to be bitten by an animal with rabies...if the mother is showing no signs of it I doubt it was from rabies.  So sorry about your loss.

  3. it probably had distemper if it was outside. especially if  it was sneezing or sickly. I've had about five kittens we found outside back in the spring and late winter and they were all the same way.

  4. There's such a thing as 'fading kitten syndrome' which hits kittens less than 4 weeks old.

If the kitten was not bitten by anything, it would not have had rabies (remember the animal biting it would have to be carrying the rabies virus which is actually not very common--it's rare most places).

A raccoon, fox, owl, tom cat, stray female cat, dog, kid or really just about anything could kill a 1 week old kitten.  So could hot or cold weather, exposure to kids wanting to 'play' with the kitten, internal problems it may have been born with, or even just having the mother lay on top of it by accident and smother it.  Without having a vet look at it, it's anyone's guess.
