i was babysitting my nephew the other day, and i was feeding him(he was in his high chair) and the tv was on, he kept turning around to look at the tv and then i turned it off, and he threw a fit, wouldn't eat anymore, so i put him down and he walked over and turned the tv on and started laughing......

the thing is these parents already have a 5 yr old that cannot fall asleep without tv and she's contently glued to the tv ..and it seems like they haven't learned anything from their first child and are following in the same foot tracks.......

should I say something?

  1. 1 year olds throw fits when they don't get their way. Then you distract them with something else and they get over it pretty quickly.

No don't say anything to the parents.  They will take it as a criticism.  When you're babysitting you can make sure to engage him in other activities so that he's not watching t.v.

  2. The TV is on at our house but my daughter hardly watches it for more then 5 minutes at a time thankfully!

I have it on for background noise as I can't stand the silence but my daughter seems more intrested in playing with herself, me or our cat and only really watches it when she's drinking her bottle or extremely tired.

As she gets older I'm hoping to get a stereo so I can just put on music instead as I do not want the TV to babysit my child or to be her main source of entertainment.

  3. As long as they are watching something educational, I don't see the problem.  I have a one and two year old, that watch Dora and Diego...they learn so much, and Elmo.  I do things differently, they don't watch it all day.  In the morning I let them watch their show, then we go outside and do activities, or stay inside when cold.  We color, read books, then while I am making lunch, they get to watch one of their programs, then they eat and take a nap.  They need to, or you need to make sure they are being active durring the day, and not just sitting their watching cartoons.  I wouldn't say anything to the parents, because everybody has a different way of raising their children....just learn from their mistakes.

  4. Definitely looks like they are raising a couple of couch potatoes.

I wish I knew a cure, but other than Mom and Dad turning off the idiot box and taking part in their kids' lives, there is no cure.

    Doc

  5. its depends what your nephew is watching. if he is watching sesame street is ok  .your nephew is too young to be a tv addict. its not yet late to introduce him to books with colorful pictures. he likes tv maybe because theres nothing else he can do or see around the house.buy some toys that is colorful, with sound and educational.

  6. While I didn't let my 1 - year - old watch TV and I don't agree with kids being glued to the idiot box, you really need to stay out of it.  Unless the kids are being abused in some way, it's not your place to say anything.  There's nothing most annoying to parents than a childless person criticizing the way they raise their children.
