Grain and water are denied to human beings who are starving and dying of diseases related to contaminated water in order to feed cattle and swine and therefore give obese, pre-diabetic Americans cheap meat for breakfast lunch and dinner.

chuckbird8 – Humourless? Strident? Out to convert? My my my, you’ve certainly been meeting all the wrong people. If I based omnivores solely by the answers I’ve seen on this site, well, I would not have a very pretty opinion.

The overwhelming majority of my friends are omnis. I have not converted anyone and I don’t intend to. They know I don’t use animal products. They also know that, in every other way, I’m just like them. When I buy food for the group, I buy a salad for myself, and hamburgers for the others. We laugh so loud the employees threaten to kick us out. Of course I would prefer that everyone in the world not eat meat, but it is their choice and theirs alone, and I respect that entirely. Just as being vegan is my choice. Why can the omnivores on this site not respect the vegans?

I am proud of my decision but I do not talk about my lifestyle unless I am asked a question regarding it. I don’t like being in the spotlight. I especially don’t like making anyone feel alienated or uncomfortable. I’m not superior to anyone else, nor am I inferior. I just eat a different type of diet. It's not that big of a deal, now is it?

By the way, I don’t know any other vegans in my city. That does not change a thing. I do what I think is right. If I was the only one to put my hand up, as you described in reason #11, I would do it with pride. This isn’t a reason to not be vegan; it’s a demonstration of how close-minded you are.

My number one reason for going vegan is because it’s the right thing to do. Everyone else has done a good job of covering the original question. =]

Why do you need ten? I only needed one.

Butchering animals without even thinking about it seems a little sick in the mind to me. Being vegan is about thinking about the world, and the damage that the animal product industry is doing. Every one is telling you that you need these products, and almost everyone is seeming to believe it.

Think outside of the box! Don't be such a follower.

Don't ignore the truth and unneeded cruelty.

When humans feel compassion, they are using a separate part of the brain than when doing thinks like driving or playing video games, when doing these activities you are using the reptilian part of your brain, sorry if I'm making this confusing, it makes more sense when you research it...

2. It's hard to get a decent meal in a restaurant.

(This can be true, but there are more and more restaurants adding stuff to their menus catering to this preference, and if you're in a big city or a college town, there'll almost def. be a vegetarian/vegan diner around. Even at a meat-heavy place like TGIF, there are several dishes which can be ordered vegan.)

3. People who've heard you're a vegan expect you to be really thin when they meet you. Sorry! lol j/k

(Hahaha! Well, "people" can expect whatever they want. I do happen to be quiet slender, yes.)

4. People expect you to be humorless, strident, and out to convert them.

(Once again, "people" can expect what they want, it's no sweat off my back. If I told people I was a Christian, they might stereotype me the same way. The people I already know know I'm not like that, and if people I don't know want to stereotype me, well, it's their loss.)

(People can think that, but when they see my healthy, happy kid, they're going to have to stop stereotyping and accept the truth.)

(So? That doesn't sound like a big deal at all. What's your huge obsession with fitting in every second of the day? So no one should be Jewish or black or redheaded either, lest they stand out or have to raise their hand alone?)

12. you fly in to meet the in-laws for christmas and your mother in law has (after being reminded beforehand) decided to forget what "vegan" means and serves an opulent spread of roast chicken, a ham, mashed potatoes with plenty of milk and butter, sweet potato pie with ice cream (the pie has condensed milk in it) and some sort of cake (eggs) and cocacola and wine to wash the whole mess down. then she watches you closely and asks you why you are not eating her food.

(My mother in law is a wonderful woman with a degree in health and fitness who runs 8 miles a day and regularly cooks awesome vegetarian/vegan food for us. Though if I weren't sure of the situation, it's polite to bring a vegan dish to contribute and to ensure you have something to eat. If I had a mother-in-law this willfully ignorant, I would simply politely exlain to her that I'm a vegan and don't eat any animal products.)

13. you can't really admit to your meat-eating friends that you don't like carrots, peas, or dill when they offer you their only vegan dish of the night which is of course, steamed carrots with baby peas and lots of their homegrown,organic dill.

(Well, my friends are pretty nice and always make an effort to include several friendly dishes at each dinner party, so it's rare I'd be in this sitch. Luckily, I DO like carrots and peas, so in most cases I'd be ok, as I love pretty much all vegetables.Once again, I would have brought a vegan dish along with me.)

14.The only vegetarian choices at the college cafeteria or local restaurant are vegetarian lasagna, salad from the salad bar (just how much salad can one person eat?), and possibly a veggie burger (usually made with milk, egg, orcheese in it).

(It's hard to envision those being the only options, I encountered much more choice than that at college and in the local bistros....on a side note, I LOVE vegetarian lasagna. The two largest makers of veggie burgers [Morningstar Farms and Boca] make their burgers vegan as well as vegetarian. If these really were the only options, I'd go to the store and cook for myself.)

15. People you eat out with get exasperated when you try to determine what exactly is in the food you are ordering. (If it were an allergy, it would be fine, but since it's a choice, it's weird.)

(Anybody who hates my decision-making had better stop being my friend right now. If they want to judge me negatively for my choices, that's their right. It's my right to make those choices for myself.)

(I'd laugh it off. I'm in pretty excellent shape so I doubt the person would be saying that as a negative thing, more as a funny thing. Though really, who would even say something like that anymore? Maybe it was in the 1970's, but nowadays it's not at all uncommon to be vegetarian, and usually when you tell people, they praise you for it.)

(I have a friend who is just like this who is purposefully a jerk about meat. I just ignore him when he makes crude comments.)

(If he wants to learn to cook those steaks himself, by all means, I'll let him. Once he's 7 or 8 he's old enough to make the decision for himself. We would sit down and have a talk about where those steaks came from and the resources used to create them, and then if he no longer wanted them, I'd give them to a neighbor or food bank.)

(Once again, nothing wrong with that. They're stating a fact, and a fact that I'm proud of.)

(Almost all of your reasons for not being vegan are based on peer pressure and mob mentality. Doing things simply to fit in in a desperate attempt to be considered "normal" by other people is a path that leads you to become a big mediocre no one. I'd rather be myself than be a sheep-like follower. I'd rather make decisions in my life because of how those decisions will affect me, rather than what the neighbors may think of me. Did you grow up in the neo-Victorian 1950's? Because your close-minded, judgmental mentality of always having to fit in and keep up with the Jones' really belongs back there, not here in 2008.)

There is an annoying connection made by many people that the way things are going is necessarily good, and/or inevitable. Perhaps the current trends are bad, and the future will not be as good as it could be. Perhaps things are heading a certain way, but this does not mean that we are powerless to stop them, nor does it mean that we should not try. This argument does not work either. One has to supply actual reason for vegetarianism, and this is not a reason, it is just an excuse at best.

I think that if my theory became widely understood and agreed with, then veganism would look and feel increasingly silly, and would more obviously occupy the moral low ground. 3) Humans are not designed to eat high fat and high cholestrol diets. Our intestines and colon are more anatomically similar to herbivores and we are the only species that drinks another species milk (cow and goat) which is unatural.
