If you were to write a speech or essay on a song in comparison to a book, how would you start it?

Our next english project is on writing a speech of a song in comparison to the novel we finished reading (Of mice and men) and pick a particular theme it relates to.

I chose the song, All these things that ive done- The Killers and it relates to candys dream of being someone and living his dream. How would i start my speech?

  1. How about:  There's an old saying "The more things change, the more they stay the same."  I found this to be true with the book "Of Mice and Men" written in 19** and the now popular song "All These things that I've done."  Each piece was written generations apart from eachother but both relate a dream of being someone....

    -and take it from there.

something like that?  Hope it helps:)

ps-if you don't know what "the more things change, the more they stay the same" means, it basically means that years and years can pass, progress can be made and the world changes but people are still just people and our "basics" such as the need for love, ect. always stays the same.

  2. Start the speech by stating a quote from anoter author who talks about the OF mine and men.

  3. Some cultures have an oral tradition in which they pass down stories and facts and dreams to the younger generations.  Some cultures have a written tradition which does the same thing.  Today, we are combining the two traditions to illustrate the common ground and themes of both.

  4. Start it like you say it in your question, I chose this song, say what song it is, that it relates to Candy's dream and start giving details to support your opening statement. Sounds like a cool, but also difficult assignment.
