Yea when you get 120 stars you get to blast onto the roof, but truthfully speaking, it doesn't matter how much stars you have to talk to Yoshi. There is a secret way to get to him right at the start and he will still give you 100 lives. But yea, you talk to Yoshi and you get 100 lives.
