Question:

10 Points for Best Answer! Why is my motorcycle stalling?

I have a honda shadow, 1988 VT1100C. It hadn't run in a while, but the carbs are now clean, and I jetted the bike and everything was running ok. Not perfect, but ok.

Today I finally got the new fuel filter in, the old one was awful clogged up with rust, but it was backordered. And now, with a nice new clean filter in, I stall if I close the choke. Meaning I put it in the position you would to start the engine cold, and shoot that extra gas in the carb. Why would more gas stall me? Did I do something wrong when I installed the filter? Or is it just that the jetting needed to be done after a filter change, and not before.

  1. Drain your gas out, remove the fuel petcock and clean that.  Its hooked up to your fuel line.  Also check your spark plug its like a meter as to how good your engine was running.

  2. your jets may be too large, also the carbs may need to be sicronized ,its like the timing on a car

  3. adjust the Idle s***w !

  4. Adjust your jet screws. Your old filter was restricting air, now you need more fuel. Back the screws out a few turns and try it.

  5. The inside of the tank has gone rusty. You need to remove the tank and clean it out. Put a little bit of fuel in it and a handful of small ball bearings (or nuts) in it, and shake the h**l out of it. Then flush it to make sure it is clean. You also need to clean the rust out of the carburetors (removing the bowls will show it) . Reassemble It with a NEW fuel filter. I had to do it to a friend's 1980 Kawasaki last week, It runs good now.

  6. if your filter was REALLY bad, then you might need re-jetted...

this is why i don't deal with carburetors anymore..EFI is so much easier to adjust...
