10-and-5 rights go to the Chicago Cubs Ryan Dempster’s advantage: MLB News
The Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum on Tuesday, July 24, said that it is Ryan Dempster himself who has to make the final decision on the impending trade. Dempster, the Cubs veteran, has the advantage of 10-and-5 rights.
Having remained in the Major Leagues for 10 years now, five of which has been with the Cubs, it is Dempster who has the right to veto any decision, or opts for the path he considers right.
"That's what the 10-and-5 rule is for," Cubs' manager Dale Sveum said on Tuesday. "If anything does come about, you have the right and ability to take your time and make a decision that's right for your family.”
Despite having spent two stints in the disabled list, Ryan Dempster – beyond any shadow of doubt, remains one of the most eminent players not only in the team, but also in the league. His performance this season has established further evidence of his superiority on the mound.
Small wonder why he is one of the most sought-after starters as the trade deadline nears. The two teams that are vying to get Dempster are the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Atlanta Braves. Nonetheless, the team has for now decided to give Dempster enough time to think over it.
That is because of his 10 years in the MLB, and his five years’ stint with the Cubs.
"Not too many people get to 10 and five," Sveum said. "When you get to that status, you're obviously a really, really good player that an organization felt was good enough to get a long-term contract. You have to be, one, a good productive player.”
Even his injuries whereby he remained in the disabled list due to right quad strain and lat tightness have not influenced the Braves’ and Dodgers’ decision to trade the player. That is largely because of the consistency he has exhibited.
Leading the Major Leagues with 2.11, Dempster will continue to inspire contemporaries and fans alike. As to what comes out of the entire episode is something to be seen in the days to come with Dempster pitching one more time on Wednesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
