  1. Bullying isn't limited to pushes and punches in the schoolyard. Psychological bullying is behavior that intentionally harms another person, and has nasty and sometimes longterm consequences for victims.

Psychological bullying is just as harmful as physical bullying in the schoolyard, says Dr Sara Goldstein of Montclair State University. Bullying is any behavior that hurts another person by manipulating social relationships and victimizing peers. Social manipulation is relatively common in relationships at school, work and home.

    Psychological bullying at school

Examples of psychological bullying and social manipulation include: ostracizing or ignoring peers, not inviting them to join groups or activities, spreading lies or rumors, name calling, and teasing hurtfully. Psychological bullying can happen in the classroom or schoolyard – and it can also happen at home or work.

Students dealing with psychological bullying view their schools as less safe, and they're less pleased with the atmosphere of the school. Boys are more likely than girls to carry weapons to school as a result of physical and psychological bullying.

Almost 10% of students are bullied at school.

    Psychological bullying at home

Siblings bully one another both physical and psychologically, and the effects are similar to bullying at school. Peer victimization isn't limited to the schoolyard.

    Psychological bullying at work:

According to bullying experts Gary and Ruth Namie, 39% of adults experience psychological bullying at work. The consequences of workplace bullying include loss of productivity and high absenteeism rates.

  2. Psychological bullying is the acty of trying to destroy someone's self-esteem.  This can be done a number of ways.  The "mean girls" in school who ostracize (leave out of the group...don't include)  another girl because she's too fat or too "uncool" or might have accidentally looked at another girl's boyfriend are psychologically bullying her.  They might get up from the lunch table the minute she sits down; they might blatantly avoid walking too close to her in the hallway; they might make nasty passing remarks "to each other" within her hearing; they might hand out party invitations to everyone in the room and give her a dirty look as they walk right past her...   Basically, there are no physical attacks on the person, but the psychological damage can be a lot worse.

  3. Psychological bullying is a systematic repeated mental oppression,  of a less powerful person by a more powerful person".

It is intimidation by means of mental coercion and psychological abuse. Methods include social manipulation, ostracism, socially ignoring those being bullied by excluding them from groups and activities, speaking to them demeaningly; especially in the company of others, spreading rumors, calling them by derogatory names, bullying other people who wish to socialize with the victim, criticizing the victim's manner of dress and other socially-significant markers (including the victim's race, religion, disability, slandering and libeling them, laughing at them and ridiculing them. This harrassment takes place repeatedly over time and is extremely detrimental to the person being bullied. It causes great psychological suffering and mental anguish, especially when it inspires feelings of helplessness.Victims of bullying can suffer from long term emotional and behavioral problems. Bullying can cause loneliness, depression, anxiety, lead to low self-esteem and increased susceptibility to illness.

A new form of psychological bullying is called Cyberbullying

According to Canadian educator Bill Belsey, it involves the use of information and communication technologies such as the internet,e-mail, cell phone and pager text messages, instant messaging, defamatory personal Web sites, blogs, online games and defamatory online personal polling Web sites that support deliberate, repeated, and hostile activity by an individual or group that is intended to harm others.

Bullies will even create blogs to intimidate victims worldwide
