You are given an equation of a line and a point. Use substitution to determine whether the point is on the line.

  1. I think there is more to the equation that you're not telling but from whats there I guess that y = 0, im probably wrong

  2. No worries...

    y= x+1

    A (1,0) means x=0 and y= 1

    so... y= x+1 becomes

               0= 1+1

               0= 2... which isn't true so the point is not on the line

  3. A point is made up of two values (x,y). So you need to substitute those values into the equation. x = 1, y = 0; 0 = 1 + 1; 0 = 2 which doesn't work so it is not a point on the line. Hope that helps.

  4. A point is expressed as ( x , y ).  So for the point A x = 1 and y = 0.  Substitution is the process of putting things that equal one another into an equation.

    After substituting all the equal things the equation looks like

    0 = 1 + 1 or 0 = 2.

    We know 0 does not equal 2 therefore the point is not on the line since plugging in those x and y values did not yield a true statement

  5. Let me rewrite it for you: 0=1+1; if the point A were on the line, there would be an equality.
