Question:

10 gallon tank for a rat?

I'm getting a hairless rat tomorrow and her owner has been keeping her in a 10 gallon tank. Is this big enough? It would be great not to have to buy her a new cage. She looks like a pretty big rat from the picture.

Thanks

  1. Absolutely inappropriate housing for a rat. They need a wire cage, and the bigger the better.

10G is way too small, plus tanks are horrible with air ventilation, which can increase the risk of respiratory complications. Barely has room for the rat, therefore has NO room for accessories (exercise wheel, hammocks, igloo, etc.)

If you are getting a rat, you should do proper research to provide the best care (food, housing, etc.)

Also know that rats are best in PAIRS, and if possible, she should get another female rat as a companion.

  2. dont keep rats in a tanks, keep them in a cage but with no wire floors, but make sure it is big.

    goood luck xoxoxo

  3. . i kept my rat in a 10 gallon tank and she was fine! and she didnt get out as often as she did with her cage. less touble and way easier to clean. she had a runner, hider and everything! but she was a fancy rat now if your talking a rex rat? heck no! bigger!!

but she also had a problem with chewing on bars so she needed a tank... i would say get a cage and a friend! but not a male..
