10 gallon tank issue- the fish are out, but the tank is not okay?

Question

I have no idea what happened with it. It was fine and then there were a billion pieces of plastic or glass in it and the sides were fine, but it looked like they were coming out of the filter. There was only was fish in it, so I put him in a different tank, he's fine, but what could this be? I have one of those waterfall ten gallon tank filters. What should I do???

i have nevr heard of that before i would ask your local pet shop that sell tanks ,

it could be maybe a cheap filter insert.  maybe the sponge insert is not working right?
