Question:

10 gallon tank setup question

For my empty 10 gallon tank I was thinking about putting in a male betta and then a school of like maybe tetras. I also want something to be a cleaning helper so I was thinking of maybe those little ghost shrimp for a tank of this size because even though I like plecos I don't think any stay small enough to stay in a 10 gallon. What do you think of this set up? And if you have any other suggestions please tell. Thanks.

  1. That sounds good, except for the shrimp.  The betta, around 5 tetras, and i would suggest a mystery snail (golden or black) for cleaning purposes.  make sure to introduce the fish slowly into the tank, 2-3 every week or so, just to be safe.

  2. Well how about putting a female betta instead of male since they are more social the ghost shrimp may be come eaten so get 3 cories and for tetras get 5 neons.

  3. the ghost shrimp will be eaten, make sure the tetras are in schools or 5 or more, don't add more than 8 fish, maybe you can have a couple of cory cats to be the cleaning crew.

  4. you have the basics right

there is no pleco which stays small enough, but there are others which you can put in there

here are some sample setups for you

    1 male or female betta

    6 cardinal tetras

    3 platies

    4 otocinclus (bottom feeder)

    and some ghost shrimp

    or

    1 male or female Betta

    6 rummy nose tetras

3 female guppies ( the males fins are to long flowing for a Betta)

4 Cory cats ( bottom feeders)

    some ghost shrimp

both setups are nice and colorful and WILL work

just make sure you also get live plants or silk plants for your Betta, they love to rest on them

as well as some hiding spots

  5. I like that you're mixing bettas and other fish, but perhaps a male betta with tetras isn't the best choice.  I've had problems with tetras in the past, that's all I'm saying.  They're annoying and I don't like them.  Why don't you try a nice sorority tank, where you have six female bettas in a ten gallon?  Female bettas can be just as beautiful as the males, and can generally live together in harmony.  You'd get the same colorful effect that you would from a school of tetras (or more, bettas are prettier than tetras in my opinion).

Also, you might want to reconsider that pleco.  I've had issues with them eating my plants in the past (leave my plants aloooone!  Aargh!) and an algae scraper works better than a pleco at cleaning your glass walls.  The ghost shrimp are a good idea.  They'll work with the betta sorority, too.

Here's a nice ten gallon with female bettas:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oousVz5Pm... although I don't like how much the female bettas in that video are nipping at each other.  They're doing that because the person who owns them put their tank next to a male building a bubble nest.  Of course they're aggressive and hurting each other, they're competing for that nice male they can all see!

A female betta is supposed to look like the fins in this video.  This lady's kind of weird (who says that to their fish?) but she has a nice tank:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11L62W6WX...

And remember to fully cycle your aquarium before you add fish to it.  I nitrogen cycle with fish flakes or pure ammonia.  A nice webpage on cycling:  http://freshaquarium.about.com/cs/biolog...
