10 gallon tank w/cage topper?

I am getting 4 young female rats. Would it be okay to get a 10 gallon tank and put a cage topper on top of it until they got a little bit older and I had saved up a little more money to get a really nice one....?

I don't think so.

I don't consider it too terrible to use a TWENTY gallon with a topper when they're babies, because I know about them easily squeezing out of most cages. But 10 gallons for 4 rats, even with a topper, is just too small, IMO. How long would they be there, and how often are you willing to clean it? I'd clean it every 2 days or so. Aquariums aren't the best cages, but they are workable. It's just much more work for you to keep it clean and keep the ammonia down.

A glass tank for your rats is not alright.

And a 10 gallon one is certainly not ok.

Only if you have a cage topper, than that's fine. But a 20 gallon tank would definitely be recommended instead of a 10 since they are so tiny. And for four rats, an even larger tank would still suit them better.

You should try and save up as much as you can and buy the largest cage possible for them. You wouldn't need to go out and get another one later on, and your rats would be happy right from the start.

My advice is don't get the rats until you get a suitable cage. And an aquarium, especially a 10 gallon one, is not suitable.

Nope. Ammonia builds up quite quickly in a tank and it will still do them harm topper or not. And a 10 Gallon is way to small for 4 rats.
