She has had her 1st heat (when she was 6 months), but I waited because I wasn't sure if I was going to get her spayed or not. I was thinking of letting her have puppies, or just keeping her unspayed and keeping a close eye on her when she's around other dogs...so she doesn't get pregnant.

  1. NO!  You can definitely still have her spayed.  So many people think they can just "keep an eye" on their female when she's in heat -- and yet the dog still gets pregnant.  Best for her health to have her spayed.

  2. no way

  3. Dogs are never too old to get fixed.  And it will be better for her overall health.  Less chance of getting certain cancers, etc.

  4. never take the chance that you can "keep a close eye" on your dog when she's in heat and if she's in heat she should NEVER be around other dogs, what if you weren't paying attention and a larger dog got at her?? would you seriously want to risk her life by having her give birth to huge puppies?  She's never too old to spay.  Don't add to the overpopulation of dogs in this nation.  Practice your ABC's  Animal Birth Control, don't add to the backyard breeders, for every puppy born millions in shelters are put to sleep because they can't find worthy homes.

    Spay your dog now.

  5. No, she needs to be spayed! Chihuahuas often have complicated births, and your dog is never too old to benefit from being spayed!

  6. She is never too old to be spayed.  And the sooner you do it, the lower her chances are of getting a cancer related to the reproductive system.

I have a toy chihuahua and they mature slower than the big ones, I just got her spayed at 8 months (but she hadn't had her first cycle yet, although the vet said we did it at a perfect time cause it was coming soon).  But they are never too old to get spayed... even if they have had their first cycle.

  7. no she isn't to old. Do realize keeping her unspayed she has a better chance of getting certain cancers she won't get if spayed...

  8. It is never to old to spay a dog, and 10 months is a fine time. There is no good reason not to spay a female dog who is not in a planned breeding program.

  9. Take the advice of the fabulous Bob Barker....spay and neuter your pet.

    The closest eye still blinks!

  10. Your dog is never too old to get spayed as long as there are no health issues

  11. Dogs are NEVER too old to get spayed....thank you for choosing to spay instead of being a bad backyard breeder.

It's a good thing you're leaving it to the pros, trust me.

Call your vet as soon as you can and make an appointment to get her spayed. You won't regret it.

  12. Dogs are never too old to be spayed.

There are studies that every time a dog goes into heat without being spayed, the chance of preventing dog breast cancer goes down.  However, dog breast cancer usually ends up being isolated.  Just remove the tumor as soon as you notice the breast getting larger.  They may or may not be malignant.

On the other hand, unspayed dogs have the chance of developing uterine infections which could also threaten the dog's life.

As for having puppies, if she is not AKC registered, proven to be free of possible genetic defects she could pass on to her offspring, and not show dog material, don't bother breeding her.  Let someone else do the breeding to improve the breed.  Since you are wishy washy, you may want to just get her spayed now.

  13. its never too old or too late to get spayed. maybe if the dog is ten you wouldnt want it to go through all that, but its never too old. it only takes seconds for a male dog to get stuck and impregnant her.

  14. talk to your vet, but i would think as long as no health problems you should do it.

  15. No! You should spay her, she isn't too old. If she isn't spayed she has an 80% increased chance of getting some cancers. There is no way to fully make sure a dog doesn't get pregnant. To breed an animal, especially as small as her, there are many risks. You need to be knowledgeable breeder and be prepared to spend more money than you make.

  16. Shes not to old and you should definitely get it done!
