10 of 12 teams for FIVB Men’s World Cup finalised – Volleyball News
The 2011 FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Cup is scheduled to be held in Japan from November 20 to December 4. According to the set plan of the Federation International de Volleyball (FIVB), a total of 12 teams from all parts of the world are expected to enter
the competition. Recently, ten of the 12 teams have been conformed for the competition on account of their better performances in their respective qualifying tournaments. The remaining two teams will be finalised through a wild card entry on Tuesday. Teams
that have successfully qualified for the competition are as followed:
Japan Brazil Serbia Cuba USA Italy Argentina China Egypt Iran
Japan
Japan was already confirmed with the competition because they will be the host nation. They did not have to go through the qualifying process like other teams.
Brazil - Argentina
Defending champions Brazil earned the qualification for 11th edition of the FIVB World Cup via CSV Men’s South American Championship, which completed its run from September 19-25. Brazil performed amazingly well and dominated their rivals. The
reigning champions picked up a gold medal victory by defeating their arch rivals Argentina in the finals showdown of the championship. On the other hand, the runner-up team Argentina also clawed its way to the World Cup with the help of better ranking points
on the international chart.
Serbia
Serbia, which is currently ranked 3rd in the world, qualified for the FIVB World Cup from Europe. The Serbs staged exquisite play at the CEV Men’s Volleyball Championship and claimed their first European Championship title. The Italian team gave
a tough competition to Serbia in the final round of the European Championship but could not hold the Serbs back from going to the top.
Cuba – USA
Cuba has the distinction of being the first team to join hosts Japan at the World Cup. Caribbean team emerged as the top team of NORCECA Championship after beating USA. The Americans lost the final fight but still managed to get into World Cup due to a higher
ranking. Cuba and USA are ranked 4th and 5th, respectively.
Italy
Italy lost the final match of European Championship to Serbia but was still confirmed for the World Cup. Italy qualified for the World Cup in similar fashion to USA as their world ranking helped them grab a ticket to Japan.
China-Iran
Asian Champions Iran and runner-up China qualified for the World Cup after a spectacular final day performance at the Asian Men’s Volleyball Championship, which recently ended in Iran.
Egypt
Egypt pulled off success at the CAVB African Nations Championship and qualified for the FIVB Men’s World Cup in Japan.
