  1. You don't state how old your father is and how tall or what the weight factor is.  If there is some obesity then a loss of weight will help.  If on the other hand he has normal weight then learning to lift using the legs as opposed to the back will help.  Most of all getting stronger would certainly help.  Increasing the strength of the back, hips, and legs along with the arms will improve his ability to lift.  He should talk to a physical therapist about this problem.  They might be able to give him some pointers in this area.
