Question

During the June holidays, I am required to produce 2 pieces of A3-sized pieces of drawing/painting based on the theme ‘people’. We are required to be as creative as we can and are allowed to use any media which includes, painting, collage, drawing with pencil, charcoal or pastel.

Our assessment will be based on the following criteria:

- 40% on composition including depth, thirds, spirals, diagonals and asymmetry.

- 30% on exploration to use different media.

- 30% on shading and toning techniques.

I have no inspirations whatsoever. I need help from somewhat similar sketches. Please provide me with links! Or, if you are an artistic person, please give me some ideas or provide a work of your own and email me! As I can’t paint well, and is ignorant of using collage, charcoal or pastel to do my artwork, I can only rely on drawing with pencil! This will make my 2nd criteria result in low marks. Therefore, I have to make sure my 1st and 3rd criteria go well. Please do help me!

If you have all of June, I would suggest experimenting with some different mediums. Pastels are very similar to crayons. Just make sure you get a blending stick to help with shading and tone. If you go to a local art supply store, the staff are usually very helpful in showing you exactly what to buy.

If you are good with pencils, try pencil colors or pastel pencils as well. There are also charcoal pencils you can get. They're relatively inexpensive.

For inspiration, I like to go to flickr.com and browse photos. You may want to search for something like "people illustrations."

Going to a local park or mall and people watching may help you get ideas. Usually to get my ideas, I just sit quietly and do a lot of thinking. It'll come to you.
