  1. Use the lights in the house only when it's necessary.  Open the drapes and blinds instead.

Unplug items that aren't being used, the toaster, blender, hair dryer, even the tv.  They still draw power when "turned off"

Stress using less toilet paper...that'll get a laugh...lol

Ask that everyone start using a timer in the shower.  Time your showers to 3 minutes.  You'll use less water, and less electricity or gas to heat water.

Ask everyone to install water saver shower heads and faucets.  Possibly get in touch with your local power company/water dept to see if they offer free "green kits"  In our town, all 5th graders receive these, they contain a water saver shower head, faucet head, draft finder, and a couple of other things.

Ask everyone if they have properly insulated their home....which means are their electrical outlets insulated (many are not) they let in cold air.  Are windows insulated, door jams...and so on.

Ask that people do not use foam products, they never break down and they aren't recyclable.  Do not frequent restaurants that use foam.

Doing these things can help.  They save energy and natural resources.

For the newspaper, not having recycling services, why don't you and your 4H group get a few newspapers, a few natural items, leaves, pine needles, small twigs, sand (only a little) shred the newspaper, then break down the newspaper in some water, add some of your natural items, strain the mush on a small gauge screen smooth it out, let it dry, cut into card sizes, and use them for Thank you cards after the county fair this year to thank the buyers, judges, and volunteers.

Here's another idea...have a Green Fair, invite the water dept, electric company, gas company, green home builders, Green landscaping company, and other business that have to do with energy and resource conservation.  Have stations that small groups can go around to and learn how they can conserve and help the earth.  Have the newspaper cardmaking as an end of the day project.

Best Wishes to you and your 4H group.

  2. money that will entice anyone to recycle collect any and all bottles, cartons. plastic bottles, aluminium cans, that have a deposit, advertise a bottle drive go house to house do a road clean up collect all the deposit able stuff and if no deposit collect it anyway cans ,glass bottles and take to a salvage yard and sell it buy the pound to the dealer  money can encourage youth to do anything then make sure you start by setting a goal for what the money is spent on for the kids

  3. I think that a lot of people will not give the dime from returnables.  How the ones without a deposit on them.  These end up in the landfill and are easy to recycle.  In Michigan I see most of the drink containers in the road are the non-carbonated type without a deposit.  Until Lansing gets its' head out of its @ss, its up to us to take the lead.

  4. Turn off lights -- avoid leaving appliances on (that includes computer, TV, curling iron, etc., etc.)

Shop at thrift stores and places like Goodwill and Salvation Army.

    Don't waste food.

    Compost.

    Don't litter (particularly cigarette butts)

Walk, ride a bike, take the school bus or other public transportation.

    Plant an organic "Victory" garden.

    Use bio-degradable, environmentally-friendly products.

    Some advice on your presentation:

    1. Do NOT constantly look at your script/notes...make small "bullet points" that refresh your memory and use them only occasionally and when absolutely necessary. An oral presentation that is memorized (or nearly memorized) will be much more effective and give you much more confidence and impact. This also makes the audience feel as if you really know your stuff and believe in it.

    2. What kind of presentation? Avoid jokes unless you are an expert at delivering them, because if they fall flat, so will your presentation. A little light-heartedness and humor is fine, but avoid jokes (as they could offend someone).

    3. Pacing and voice. Also, identify those aspects that need dramatic pauses or emphasis or spirit. Do NOT whisper or raise your voice. Do NOT present in monotone, but add cadence to your speech. Example of dull: The womanandherbelovedcat took a trip acrosscountry. Example of emphasis: The woman..........and her be-LOVE-ED cat......took a trip across country. Do not let end of your sentences trail off. Be expressive in voice and demeanor.

    4. Audience contact: Even if you can't see the audience, make eye contact, or pretend to make eye contact. Do NOT stare at the front row, or you will look like you are looking down which will make you look unsure about your presentation. Move your eyes and head around the audience, even if you can't see them well. If you can't see the audience well, focus on the middle-to-back of the audience, as this will lift your head up and make you appear more confident.

    6. Use good grammar. Do not use contractions if at all possible. Do not slur words.

    7. Dress conservatively so that your presentation -- and not how you are dressed -- is what the audience is focusing on. (Of course, if your presentation is enhanced by a costume, go for it).

    7. STAND UP STRAIGHT AND SMILE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Unless, of course, your presentation is about something tragic and painful, but even then, stand up straight and occasionally smile).

    8. Practice, practice, practice!!!! Watch yourself in the mirror, practice your presentation in front of friends and family, and, video tape your presentation so you can see yourself and what areas warrant improvement.

  5. * Advertise your green day at least a month in advance, to allow excitement and curiousity to build up.

    * Make environmentally friendly cleaners (put them in colorful bottles)

    * Bracelets or necklaces made from hemp string

    * Have them plant their own vegetable or fruit seed in a foam cup filled with organic compost, when the plant is healthy enough they can plant it in their backyard and then recycle the foam cup (Put a recycling sticker on the cup so they remember).

    * At the end of the day you can have a quiz. Be sure to mention a reward at the start of the day and then reward the top three highest scores with nice stuff, then give something of slightly less quality to the rest of the class. (Make sure no one feels left out)

    * Let the kids get dirty and messy during the activity, and try being funny (maybe have an "accident" if you know what I mean).

There are many other things you can do, just pretend you're a kid again and let the ideas flow out.

  6. In my community, there are a number of local newspapers delivered 2 or even 3 times per week.  That adds up to a lot of resources and energy going to waste as many of these papers are not read.  We can telephone the circulation department of each newspaper and ask that the paper not be delivered to our address.  (If I want to read one, I can look at them online or go to the library to look at a copy.)  Every week, that adds up to 9 local newspapers and a lot of flyers that do not go into the recycle bin.  It is better that the tree was never cut, rather than recycling the products after it was cut.

    Good luck on your project.

  7. 1. Recycle beer and wine bottles.

    2. Stop wasting paper.

    3. Donate your old course books to ur juniors, if you r not willing to use them again.

    4. Don’t waste pencils; few trees can be saved this way too.

    5. Stop using poly bags, carry jute bags if your mama asks you to bring some thing from market.

    6. Limit the use of body spray.

    7. Save electricity.

    8. Aware your friends and parents regarding environmental issues.

    9. Plant trees in your surrounding and school.

    10. Set good examples to your future coming generation,  insure better environment for them.
