Well the two main characters, the two brothers (I haven't read that book in a while so I can't remember their names), ran away from their mean aunt and uncle after their mother died. They came to Venice because she told them so many wonderful stories about it.

The Thief Lord, (forget his name too), does not like his parents and leads a double life by pretending to be a great thief and not rich.

His gang all are children with no place to live and are always in danger of being caught.

When they break the carousel, it brings an end to any hopes the others might have had of growing up on it or becoming young again.

The main theme in the book is the wish to be young again.
