Are red-tailed sharks schooling fish?

I have a 55 gallon aquarium, is it okay to just buy one? Also, do they nip fins? I know that bala sharks sometimes do. And also, do they get more than 12 inches long or is it true they only get to be 7 inches long?

  1. Red-tailed black sharks are territorial and hostile. They can be kept in community tanks with great care. They are also very intolerant of others in their species or similar species in general. However, many of the cyprinid sharks, including the Red-Tail, can be kept in groups if the aquarium is very large, there are plenty of hiding places in the aquarium, and three or more individuals are purchased at a time. Nonetheless, many of the so-called "sharks" are best left to more experienced aquarists.

Red-tailed black sharks can reach a length of 17 cm, and can live up to the age of 15 years.

  2. Red tail sharks will nip fins of fish that are even bigger than them.  They are a school fish just don1t overcrowd.  they do not get more than 12 inches.

  3. Redtail sharks prefer to be the only shark in the tank, so 1 is just fine. They are considered semi-aggressive, so they may nip fins and should only be kept with other fish that have the same temperment. It is true that they only grow to about 6 or 7 inches.

  4. Yes just get one. They do not school. Once they mature they will not tolerate other sharks. Unless you have a 100 gal. which you don't you shouldn't get more than one. Even with a 100 gal. there is no guarantee the fish won't attack and kill each other.

I have a red-tailed shark and he dosen't fin nip at all. He minds his own business and ignores the other fish. I have heard they can grow to be that large but most likely yours won't reach 7". Mine is around 5". Yours should be fine in the 55 unless he happens to out grow the tank which is unlikely.

    Good Luck
