What would i need to write about?

question: describe the development of a country with cultural differences

i am thinking of doing india (was there last yr)

i am planning on talking about the caste system, religions and conflicts caused by different religions(hindus in india and muslims in pakistan) and languages.

but i don't think i am answering the question coz it says the DEVELOPMENT of cultural differences. what do i do or is what i am planning to write actually answering the question

First it is not about 'Development of cultural differences', but 'Development of a country with cultural differences' (this particular English is unfortunate). India is the best choice.

When it is a matter of cultural differences westerners jump (like a knee jerk reaction) at different religions like Hindu vs. Muslim. It is too inaccurate. Granted that Pakistan is formed for Muslims. Why this relocation of tens of millions of people, over enormous distances of contrasting climes and terrain?

It is just like transplanting millions Polish people in Spain & Italy and Greeks in Britain. Stalin did it brutally. Then why more than that number still remain where they are, in India? Why these differences came to the fore, in 20th century when there was relative calm for centuries earlier? It is political, purely. In spite of it, rest 80% (proportion of Hindus) have humongous differences in culture and language. 'Hinduism' is not a monolithic religion with a central doctrine as in Islam or Christianity, but a way of western categorisation of a people to bring some comprehension to western understanding. Differences manifest as a result of climatic conditions and from the loftiest snowy mountains (above 20,000' much more than Switzerland) at 30deg latitude to sea level almost near Equator (southernmost point in India is 6deg lat.) and crazy racial mixture over millennia. Caste system runs through the length of the society and is absent outside South Asia, there might be other differences though.

Concept of a 'country and then the people' is western model. People have moved to new geographical area with the idea of a country and created it there. Canada, Australia, New Zealand, USA and South Africa are the best examples, where natives and their statehood concept have no chance and so did not survive. People of India are like those natives in that they preserved what they have inherited.

With this as the background, bring out the development of the country. Any essay on the topic is not going to be accurate. It becomes debatable.

If the question means a country where cultural differences are increasing you need to work with a country that has a high immigration rate.  Canada, Australia, Great Britain all have high immigration rates and encourage cultural tolerance.  The U.S. tries to modify or lessen cultural differences.
