  1. It looks like it should be: 011 61 3 9558 xxxx

You can check exact codes via http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/di...

If you put in your original number 558 xxxx it says:  Warning

The number of digits in the area code and subscriber number is not as expected for this country,

  2. The problem is in which middle code for Melbourne to dial. It's usually 011-6138 then the number or 011-6139 and the number. If you're trying to call someone's cell phone and not a fixed land line, then you need to find out what their mobile carrier is and find the code.

Here's the site in case you have problems:

    http://www.ecallchina.com/country/Austra...

    Hope that helps.

  3. Use this site:

    http://www.countrycallingcodes.com/

  4. You don't need the 11.

    0061 3 number

    0061 3 9876 5432 e.g.

  5. The 3rd one is correct I think and it should work just fine.  I just dialed from the U.S to Australia using 011-61-3-93-558-1000 and it worked.

  6. Melbourne local numbers were changed from 7 digits to 8 digits some years ago, with all existing numbers at the time having a 9 prefixed to them, so at first thought it sounds as though you might be working from an old listing.

If this were the case, then the number you would need to dial today from the U.S. is 011-61-3-9558-xxxx.   You say you've already tried this, however, and it didn't work.   What message, tone, or other response did you get from dialing that?

    The other possibilities are:

    1.  The 558-xxxx number you have is no longer in service as 9558-xxxx.

    2.  The number you have been given is supposed to be a newer 8-digit type, but a digit is missing.

  7. Melbourne numbers are 8 digits not 7, try putting a 9 in front of the 558

  8. is this person in Melbourne OR near melbourne

as an 55 number could indicate that they are in local area near melbourne....like Warnanbool which has an area code of 55

so therefore from the US  you might need to dial

    011 613 55 then ****** phone number

the local phone directory website is

white pages - private people - Location: Melbourne

    http://www.whitepages.com.au/wp/busSearc...

    or

    yellow pages - business style

    http://www.yellowpages.com.au/

    good luck

    cheers
