  1. XtimesY=Z

  2. If it takes x pounds to grow y oranges, then it takes x/y pounds per orange.

Try it with numbers.  If it takes 6 pounds of fertilizer to grow 2 pounds of oranges, do you see that it takes 3 pounds per orange?  6/2 = 3.

With those numbers, then, if I want to grow 8 pounds of oranges, I'll need 3(8) = 24 pounds of fertilizer.  Take the number of pounds of fertilizer per orange and multiply it by the pounds of oranges.

    Does that make sense?

  3. it is a proportion:

    x pounds / y oranges = ? pounds/ z oranges

    Cross-multiplying:

    ? y =xz

    ? = xz / y pounds

  4. ex. If it takes "2" pounds of fertilizer to grow "10" oranges how many pounds of fertilizer are needed for 200 oranges then the answer would be 40 pounds of fertilizer

  5. Are "z" and "y" related?  For example, if it takes 2 lbs of fertilizer (x) to grow 10 oranges (y), then how much fertilizer would it take to grow 50 oranges (z)?

Otherwise I'm not sure how you would answer that appropriately.

  6. It takes (X) 2 pounds of fertilizer to grow (Y) 1 orange.

It takes (X) 2 pounds of fertilizer times (Y) 100 oranges to grow (Z) 100 oranges.
