10 seconds before carpool is closed?

I was on a toll road in California and it offers carpool. People in the carpool doesn't need to pay the $4 fee.

While I was driving in the carpool lane, aproximately 10 seconds before I reach the booth, the sign changed from "Carpool Open" to "Carpool Closed". I stopped at the booth but there was no one to take my toll fee. So I drove away. Will I get a fine?

find the telephone number for the toll authority- tell them what happened.

At the worst, ask them were you can mail the toll and is there a form you can download to include with your payment.

The hassle/toll is worth avoiding the fine/ticket
