Socratic Method.......which promotes problem solving....not very common in public schools, if at all, might actually stimulate thinking versus rote memorization....and that is soooooo contrary to NCLB.

jigsawing-

brainstorm ideas as a class each person create a list or suggestions to a quote- idea.

students then come up and present the ideas.

other students critique the ideas points being awarded if their lines of logic make sense be they right or wrong.

an overall picture mindmap is then created by the clas son the whiteboard to help the students review the topic without the  teacher pickign up a pen. the teacher monitors  the process makign sure everybody is involved  and recording points

i like to teach graphign by having my kids move their bodies around the room- up down sideways and yes- upside down.

we get some sense of translations of graphs going on and its very memorable.
