  1. Dragging your ten week old puppy around with a lead is the best way to teach it to be scared of the lead and hate going on walks with you. You need to teach the puppy gently and patiently what a lead is and that it is fun to walk with you.

Start by walking around indoors with the puppy following you - WITH NO LEAD ON, near to your side is best, use treats, leg taps, kissy sounds, toys whatever it takes to encourage your puppy to walk near your leg. Make sure you give it lots of praise when it is walking near you. Next show the lead to your puppy (seeing as your first try at walking the dog was so dismal I would make a point of getting a new leash that you can help the puppy associate with positive things rather than negative - being dragged!) and let it (what is with the "it", is "it" a girl or a boy, does "it" have a name??) sniff the lead and investigae it. When the pup has done this clip the lead onto the colar and let the puppy wander around dragging the lead with it, don't put ANY pressure on the lead yet. When pup is used to this progress to encouraging pup to wander next to you while still dragging the lead. Next, pick up the lead and encourage puppy to walk next to you, if the pup walks away from you or stops then don't yank on the lead, just stand still and encourage the pup towards you, lots of praise when it comes and stands beside you. Only when you can get the puppy to walk calmly beside you on lead without dragging it or choking it should you progress to walking it outside. After having success indoors start with your yard then progress slowly to outside your property.

I really think puppy preschool would be a great option for you and your pup. It will teach you how to bond with your new puppy, train it with positive reinforcement, patience and consistency, and socialise it effectively. It would benefit both the puppy and you.

Good luck, hope you are kinder to your little one.

  3. This is a fairly common puppy behavior.  They may be reluctant to walk because they are fearful of certain things outside, or they may just be unused to the leash and collar. One way to solve this issue is to make the walk more fun. Some things to try:

    1. Play the find-it game with him. Say "find-it" and throw a yummy treat (e.g. cheese) near him. He will likely gobble it up. Then just keep repeating. I would first start inside the house, and move outside. Initially just keep him in the front-lawn or close to the house.

    2. Bring a toy with you and play tug with him outside.

    3. Teach him to target your hand. I use the "nose" command. First hold a treat and put your hand in front of his face. Say nose. He will likely touch his nose to your hand to try and get at the food. When he does this, say "Yes/good", praise and give him the food. Keep repeating until he gets it. Then you can stand one or two steps away and say "nose", praise him and treat him well for coming to you and touching your hand. Once you have trained this inside the house, you can use this outside to get him moving along.

    4. Do obedience training sessions with him everyday (just 10-15 minutes per session is good). Use positive reinforcement techniques. This will help strengthen your bond and build your dog's confidence. Doing an obedience class with your dog will also be a very enjoyable experience.

It is best to keep a loose leash most of the time when you are walking him. Frequent tension on the leash may cause stress in the dog and cause him to resist walks.

  4. yes, he doesnt know what the leash is for. Every puppy goes thru this. its normal. he'll eventually know to go along with it,

  5. YEAH MY 2 MONTH OLD DOG WAS LAZY I WOULD DRAG HER ALL THE TIME. SHE WOULD BE DIRTY BY THE END OF THE DAY AND I WOULD FEEL TERRIBLE.  BUT MAYBE YOU SHOULD TRY RUNNING THAT ALWAYS WORKED FOR ME!

  6. Yes its normal =] My miniature pinscher done the same. You have to keep taking it for walks TRYING to make him walk. You may seem your dragging it but it will get use to it and eventually start walking. My dog actually kept making himself vomit. Your not being cruel every dog has to learn. Now my dog loves walks.

    hope this helps and goodluck

  7. I hope you are not really dragging your dog. Encouraging your puppy and make it fun to go for a walk works well. Offer a treat like cheerios when the puppy walks with you. Sign up for a puppy obedience class will help too.

  8. I have 3 chihuahua's all 8 months and two of them refuse to walk on a leash they have been like that since I've had them so my smallest Chi will drag the other two around when they have to be on a leash.

  9. yes like the first 3 times i had to drag him (i have those body leashes so you dont like choke him) after that he would walk behind me and now he loves it and now  he drags me (almost)
