What is it with manufacturers and pink?

I have a little girl of four and a half who LOTHES pink. She is a mini Lara Croft who lives in her camo trousers and khaki t-shirt. She dislikes skirts and dresses and her bedding is Buzz Lightyear. She rarely plays with dolls, preferring her wooden fire station or to be out on her climbing frame hanging upside down.

Basically, I have a tomboy.

The trouble is, manufacturers assume all girls like pink and seem to think this colour has to be included on most items of their clothing.

Right now I am trying to find a pair of trainers for my girl. I have been to Clarks, Brantano, Cloggs – can I find any to suit? Can I heck! She desperately wants ‘flashing’ ones but all I can find is Barbie, Fifi and the Flowertits, Dora the Boring Explorer or pink/lilac/purple sparkly things! Boy ones seem to be mainly black so they are no good either as I prefer white.

Last year she had some Nike ones – white with blue trim and they were perfect (and they flashed!)

Any ideas?

  1. I just done a little search on google:

    http://www.wynsors.com/ROLSOLE-LIGHTS-p-...

Also you might like to try going onto Ebay and searching for LA GEAR trainers or Hi Tech they do those flashing trainers, and remember Ebay do sell brand new items so you'll not be buying second hand shoes for your little girl

  2. I was a tomboy as a girl too and gave my parents a headache throughout! It surprises me that Clarks has jumped on the Barbie/Dora the Explorer bandwagon as they used to make lots of pricey but neutral shoes and trainers.

Try looking online (Amazon, for example).

  3. this is aboslutely fine, we only percieve that girls should be wearing pink because we have the perception pi k is for girls and blue and black is for boys relaity is there are so many colours and some like yellow green blue and pink , let her like what she likes, this is her own personality someing out and makes her no less of a girl, to much pink can seem to overbearing, perhaps if you would like to see some pink on her try cameo pants that are pink you can get the, every where,as long as she is just having fun as a child and not killing the animmals there are aboslutely no problems

  4. You can try a sporting goods store, they have kids' shoes there. Like Nike, NewBalance, etc. When I was young I was like that too... It's just a stage for most kids. Like one week they like pancakes, the next week they don't.

  5. I like Brooks, and Dr. Scholls has blue ones. I have a girl who likes blue.

It's great your daughter is  a tomboy, cuz I have a book called Women's Ways of Knowing, and the tomboys grow up to be the rebels who become the women who change things. Woohoo. Another one for our side.

  6. Just try finding ones that are all white. Also, have you tried the Sketchers website or Ecko shoes for children, or Baby Phat, these are designers that usually have unique shoes. Good luck, I know she wants to be able to express herself and it is hard when lots of times it is the same styles.

  7. Nobody hates the singer Pink.

  8. I agree--buy boy's clothes for her.  Try Children's Place--they are not all black--I buy white pants for my son all the time there.  If you can afford it--Ralph Lauren at Dillard's and Macy's makes great preppier-style kid's clothes in non-pink colors--I get a lot of that stuff on sale by checking the sale racks frequently.  Trainers=tennis shoes right?  Well, Stride Right has plenty of white shoes for both girls and boys and they have the light-up ones as well.  Rack Room also has a good white shoe collection for kids.

However, I have the same complaint about boy's clothes for my son.  My son is very outdoorsy and rugged and I dislike the Diego/superhero/Pooh etc printed clothing that most stores carry.  I tend to shop mainly at Gap for him to get stylish clothing that doesn't look like a silkscreen threw up on it.  I also get lots of basic non-printed T's and sweats at Target and Children's Place.  Just wish we had more variety.  I live in Florida, so I'd like to see kid's surfer and/or beach type clothes--tank tops, board shorts, lightweight pants, etc.  A lot of Gap's stuff is too heavy for a tropical climate like we have here--especially their winter stuff.  We need more climate appropriate clothing here.

I'd also like to see more color choices for boys--he shouldn't always have to wear blue or khaki--though he does look great in them (blonde and blue-eyed).

    Good luck.

  9. Buy boys trainers.

  10. first off i want to say that you put Fifi and the Flowert i ts instead of flowert o ts... lol.. i nearly peed myself when i read that.. im not sure if you did it on purpose but secertly i think that while watching it with my daughter.. i'm sick of CARTOONS.. lol.. anyways

your best option for your lillte independant one is to i guess look online like others have suggested..

    Good luck,,

  11. How about trying to find the ones that she had last year- the nike ones, but in a bigger size.

  12. Why does it all have to be brand names? Go on ebay and look in trainers for her shoe size - even if you don't want to buy from there it will tell you what the makes are. Seriously, Nike and Adidas for a four year old who will grow out of them in months? What a waste of money.

I'd buy her some black ones too, they sound far more appropriate for a child who's into outdoors. You prefer white - but who's wearing them? And black will look far better with the clothing you describe.

  13. Shop in  the boys' department. These days, what's the diff anyway.

Make some of her clothes. There are lots of genderless fabrics out there.

As for shoes, look online. There are websites where you can design her trainers to order. They may cost more but you'll get exactly what she wants.

  14. I'm a bit slow, but...trainers for an almost 5 year old? Good ol' tennis shoes ought to be ok, right?

Try Wal-mart. They're cheap, cute, and last time I checked, they had some that could go for a boy or a girl.

Not that it helps, but we've got some superman/spiderman/red-white-n'blue shoes here that have lights....
