  1. Hello, I am not living in Hong Kong to know the RTHK volunteer details except from hearing it some time on the program archive last month when the quake happened.  I want to commend you for seeking to volunteer even though you are not local.  I am an overseas Chinese living in the US, but I want to answer your question.

It is a pledge to volunteer 100 hours in the next 5 years. The main requirement is you must be at least 18 years of age.  Depending on your skill or interest (medical, psychological care, food, clothing distribution, children services...) there are worldwide organisations like Red Cross, Unicef, Oxfam, Salvation Army, or there are local Hong Kong agencies which you will see in the link.

Here is an informational site (with English) by the University of Hong Kong.

    http://www.hku.hk/chinaearthquake/inform...

From there are many links so you can call the organisations and talk to them in Cantonese or email HKU in English.

Each charity has a volunteer signup form with its own setup and requirements, but here are general volunteer "need to know" from www.quakevolunteer.hk in Chinese:

    1) understand the mission and values of the organisation where you want to volunteer

    2) respect and follow the directions of the governmental agencies and organisations

    3) be prepared for difficulties in the disaster zone such as harsh weather, living conditions, traffic, diseases etc.

    4) understand and respect the politics, economics, culture of the disaster zone, and foster a cooperative spirit with others

My heart goes out to the victims and survivors. I wish you all the best in the relief effort.
