1040 X Tax Question?

Do you have to file a federal and state 1040x? Where do I get the forms to print out? My taxes were done wrong my parents didnt claim me and my form says they did.

  1. Yes you do to amend any previously submitted return.

    go to www.irs.gov and download the form.

    And your State's Tax Assessor's website.

    Or try the Post Office/Library


  2. Let me repeat what Judy said.  A 1040X won't make you eligible for the stimulus.

    If you would have gotten the stimulus except that you erroneously indicated that you could be claimed as a dependent, too bad.  You won't get $300-$600 now, but *might* get the money when you file your 2008 tax return (there will be a 2nd chance worksheet).

  3. Maybe yours were right - if they COULD HAVE claimed you but just didn't, you aren't legally allowed to claim yourself.

    If you already got all of your federal income tax withholding back, don't bother, since it won't make any difference.  An amendment won't make you eligible for a stimulus payment, and your refund wouldn't change.

    But to file an amendment and claim yourself, for federal download form 1040X at irs.gov  - for amending state, it depends on what state you live in - for some states there is nothing to amend for that.
