Are these 1080 "upgrade" regular DVD players worth getting?

They are not too expensive, but will they make my regular DVD look better on my 52 inch 1080p LCD HD television?

I already have a blue ray player (PS3), but I still have tons of regular DVD's.

Are these "1080" DVD players worth getting??

  1. Your PS3 is considered by my many to be one of the best up-converters on the market.  Use an HDMI cable for best performance.

  2. that would be waisting money, your Blu-Ray capable PS3 is also capable of upconverting your DVD's too.

  3. Both your HDTV and your Blu-ray player upconvert DVDs.  The question of which does it better (and add a stand alone upconverting DVD player to the mix) is determined by the quality of the video processor.

The best upconverters can make DVDs look pretty darn good ... but they still are not "true" HD (the detail is lacking).

On my 720p projector, DVDs on my HD DVD player  (a better than average upconverter) look only slightly soft relative to HD DVDs. So close I've had no real incentive to move to HDM -- given the premium prices. I'm sticking with DVD for now ... and I doubt I'd bother rebuying more than a very small number of titles in my DVD collection if I ever do upgrade.

Try your Blu-ray player vs a normal DVD player and see what upconversion on the Blu-ray does. A stand alone upconverting DVD player probably wouldn't beat the Blu-ray player by much ... although if you want to cover all the bases the HD-A3 is being sold off at bargain prices. Get one for less than $100 and you can watch HD DVDs too ... including the ones not out for months yet on Blu-ray.
