  1. The short answer is 1080p is better. To learn why read on!

The difference is between "i" and "p". The "i" stands for interlaced, while the "p" stands for progressive. TV's use to all work through interlacing. This means first lines 1, 3, 5, 7 would be displayed, then lines 2, 4, 6, 8. So for every frame you are watching, it takes two sets of info coming across the screen.

In more modern times, TV's and players have become capable of showing all of the lines  in progressive order, meaning 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc. This definitely has a much crisper, cleaner look.

So 1080i and 1080p are very different!

  2. Like most things you've got to see it to believe it.  Go down to any "big-box" retailer and ask to see their "side-by-side, 1080i vs. 1080p" displays.  Chances are more than one TV manufacturer has these demonstrations up and running.

An even better comparison is to ask the salesperson to show you a "Standard HD broadcast signal" and video from a "Blu-ray Disc player" back-to-back, on the same "1080p-capable" HDTV.  Make sure the Blu-ray player's hooked up with an "HDMI cable".

If you already own an HDTV, the upgrade to a "Full1080p" HDTV isn't worth the money.  If you're still watching an old "analog" set and haven't made the switch to HD, then you should go ahead and buy a "1080p" model for your very first HDTV.

And remember, the only "1080p" sources are Blu-ray Disc and HD-DVD.  Regular HD broadcasts only offer "1080i".

  3. i work in hdtv retail.  the last answer was spot on, but to give you more simple terms on the matter, 1080i will be more comparable to a 720p picture to the human eye.  Keep in mind that the ONLY benefit to having a 1080p tv is so you can watch blurays or hd dvds.  hd cable/sattelite is all broadcasted in 720p or 1080i and the industry won't be upgrading anytime soon because they don't have the capable bandwidth for 1080p.

  4. 1080p of course..
