I received a research grant from school, and I suppose it falls under scholarship. But what's the difference between that and prizes/awards?

  1. A grant in not a scholarship. If you received a 1099 MISC you need to list it as an award. They "awarded" you a grant. I suspect, but don't know for certain, that a scholarship would be the same anyway. The point is, if you got a 1099 you have to claim it on your income taxes.
