10wk old miniature dachshund puppy question about puppy stool...?

The breeder had my Brody on Eukanuba puppy food and she gave me a small baggy for him and she said if I wanted to change his food I would have to add little by little of the new puppy food to his original food. I did, I bought a bag of Iams puppy food and mixed it in a little at a time. It's been a little over a week and my puppy has not had a hard stool since...he has diarrhea. I am out of his Eukanuba puppy food do I need to put him back on it? Also the back of the Iams bag says to feed the puppy about a 1/2-1/4 cup daily...does he need more than that? I feed him once in the morning and then once in the evening...How long should I allow this to continue until I take him to the Vet? Brody has been dewormed twice and he has had two of his puppy shots...he is due for his third soon.

Thanks for any help or advice!

  1. Well, just put him back on Eukanuba puppy food and see if he stops having diarrhea, if that doesn't help then you could take him to the vet to see why he's having diarrhea.

  2. I would give Brody another Week as his body is just adjusting to the new food, I recently switched from Pro Plan to Eukanuba and My Boxer had diarrhea for about two weeks before he got it into his system. Our vet encouraged us to continue with strictly the Eukanuba and to come back if  three weeks passed and he was still having diarrhea. So continue the Iams and watch brody for any change in stool, like if he begins to have black tarry stool, or bloody stool, other than that he's system is just having a rough time adjusting! and the 1/4-1/2 cup sounds about right but I would ask your vet the next time you go for shots! Take Care:)

  3. We have a miniature dachshund, he's about a year now.

I would change his food ASAP, I would first assume that there is something in his food that doesn't agree with him.  That happened with our dog.  If you don't want the Eukanuba for what ever reason, I would try the Nutro brand for small puppies.  It's what we use and our dog is very healthy.

As for the amount, I think that sounds fine.  You don't want to feed him too much, as he could easily get fat - especially if he is not getting enough exercise.  Our mini gets a lot playing with our three cats.

    Good luck.
