  1. Delaware; named in turn for Sir Thomas West

Georgia; In honor of George II of England

Louisiana; In honor of Louis XIV of France

Maine; It has been considered a compliment to Henrietta Maria, queen of Charles I of England. She was said to have owned the province of Mayne in France.

Maryland; In honor of Henrietta Maria (queen of Charles I of England)

North Carolina; In honor of Charles I of England

New York; In honor of the Duke of York

Pennsylvania; In honor of Adm. Sir William Penn

South Carolina; In honor of Charles I of England

Virginia; In honor of Elizabeth “Virgin Queen” of England

Washington; In honor of George Washington

West Virginia; In honor of Elizabeth, “Virgin Queen” of England

  2. Delaware: named for Sir Thomas West, the 12th Baron De La Warr.

Georgia: in honor of King George II of England.

Louisiana: the French explorer Robert Cavelier de La Salle named the region Louisiana to honor France's King Louis XIV in 1682.

New York: named in honor of the Duke of York

North Carolina and South Carolina: the word Carolina is from the word Carolus, the Latin form of Charles. Charles I (1600-1649) was King of England, Scotland, and Ireland, from March 27, 1625 until his execution in 1649.

Pennsylvania: the name Pennsylvania is a Latinized word made up of Penn + sylva "woods" + nia (noun suffix) or, roughly, "Penn's Woodland", named in honor of Admiral Penn.

Washington: in honor of the first president of the United States, George Washington.

  3. See below.

  4. Washington (after George)

Virginia ( after the virgin queen, Elizabeth)

    Georgia (after King George)

Pennsylvania (after William Penn's father, meaning Penn's Woods)

New York (after the Duke of York)

Maryland (after queen something or other, I forgot)

    Louisianna (after France's King Louis)

I can't think of any more.  There are several named after Indian tribes so perhaps they mean that?

  5. Washington, Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Louisiana, and Pennsylvania are currently states.

Franklin was a state at one time.  That makes ten.

If there must be one more, could it be New York, named to honor the Duke of York, the future King James II?

  6. Virginia, for Elizabeth I (the Virgin Queen)

    Pennsylvania, for William Penn

    Georgia, for King George II

Maryland, for Henrietta Marie, wide of Geroege II

    Delaware, Lord De La Warr

Louisianna, for Louis XVI of France

New York, for the Duke of York

North Carolina, South Carolina, for Charles I

    Washington, for George Washington

and West Virgina, again for Elizabeth I..

Thats the ones I know of.
